Cleaning Barbecue Grills

Cleaning barbecue grills is necessary to keep down the growth of harmful bacteria. Bacteria usually grows on and around the grill grates and underneath the grill grates where the drippings fall. Just as it is important to wash your hands and the food you prepare, keeping these cooking surfaces clean is critical for your family’s health. Bacterial infections send many people to the hospital each year. Most of the victims are young or elderly. The build up of creosote in charcoal grills can be quite nasty. If it falls or drips on the food it will taste bitter.

Cleaning barbecue grills can extend the life of your grill. It prevents build up that can flame up, damaging the grill. It is also a great time to inspect the grill for handles that need to be tightened, heating elements that need to be replaced or grill hinges that need to be repaired. While you are cleaning, make sure the vents or dampers are working properly. Make sure the lid seals tightly and no pieces are missing or damaged.

Cleaning barbecue grills is easy with the right stuff. Steel bristle brushes are excellent for steel models. Be sure to check your users manual or manufacturer’s instructions before using anything so abrasive. Chemical cleaners are available in most grocery stores and other stores that carry grilling supplies and accessories. Most of the chemical cleaners work best when they are allowed to sit a few minutes on the surface to be cleaned. Steel wool is also great on grill interiors and grates.
